Dersin Amaç ve İçeriği

Course Objectives: The aim of this course is to convey the approaches, theories and models developed in the field of communication to undergraduate students, to reveal the basic concepts and arguments of the theories and to gain the ability to comprehend and criticize issues and problems in the light of the cultural, intellectual and historical context in which these theories are produced.
Course Content: The content of this course is to examine the theories and approaches put forward in line with the communication tools developed with modern society by comparing the historical, political, social and economic mainstream and critical orientations with each other.

1) To be able to interpret the historical development of communication theories and the relationship of these theories with different variables,

3) To be able to explain the historical basis of these theories by defining the concepts developed depending on the critical and liberal approaches and theories related to mass communication,
4) Being able to write an assignment in academic language in the field of communication theories,

1) Explains the similar and different aspects of the approaches and theories related to the field and can explain the criticisms made about the theories,
2) To be able to interpret the works of theorists in the field of communication,
3) To be able to analyze current events related to communication theories at national and international level.

Week Subject Related Preparation
1) Introducing the course, explaining the process, concepts and topics of the course. Explaining the classifications of communication theories, sociology and interdisciplinary relations.
2) Basic concepts of communication theories, those who laid the foundations of sociology, first approaches in communication theories.
3) Basic concepts in communication theories, Chicago School, mass society, communication studies and basic paradigms, Introduction to mainstream and critical communication theories.
4) Magic bullet theory, Lasswell model, information theory and Shannon-weaver model, socio-psychological approaches and theories, motivation and motivation, perception and perception, attitude and attitude change, individual's group bonds.
5) Schema Theory, which is one of the socio-psychological approaches and theories, Schramm's mass communication model, propaganda and mass communication, Hovland's army research and source reliability, two-stage information flow from research related to the message, multi-stage flow, opinion leader, gatekeeper.

9) Technology-centered approaches from mainstream communication theories: Technological determinism theory, mass communication technology in modernization, diffusion of innovations, information society and communication technologies, information gap approach, numerical inequality.
10) Modernization-communication-technology: Walter Benjamin, Q.D.Leavis - F.R.Leavis, David Riesman, Raymond Williams. Structuralism, linguistic analysis and semiotic analysis from linguistic and semiotic approaches.
11) Cultural studies from linguistic and semiotic approaches, post-structuralism, Baudrillard-postmodernism and hyperreality, communicative action theory- Habermas.
12) Media and cultural imperialism theories, capitalism and consciousness industry, Althusser and the ideological apparatus of the state, Bourdieu and hegemony theory, political and economic approach.
13) Political, economic, cultural approach and cultural approach from change theory (Frankfurt school and culture industry, British cultural school), globalization and information networks.
14) Unbalanced communication and new world order, media and propaganda theory from political, economic, cultural approach and change theories. The development and conditions of communication studies in Turkey, the current situation in Turkey.
