Dersin Amaç ve İçeriği

Course Objectives: This course aims to provide students with a foundational understanding of the historical conditions that made the Turkish Revolution necessary, the resistance movement led by Mustafa Kemal Pasha against the occupation of Anatolia, and the military, political, and diplomatic dimensions of this movement. During the course, it is intended that students gain inclusive and equitable educational opportunities (SDG 4), become aware of social and historical inequalities and develop a consciousness to reduce them (SDG 10), and understand the importance of peaceful and just societies (SDG 16).
Course Content: The reasons for the failure of the reforms implemented during the late period of the Ottoman Empire, as well as their impact on the reforms carried out during Atatürk’s era, should be explained with examples.
The ideologies that emerged in the late Ottoman period with the aim of saving the state—such as Turkism, Islamism, Ottomanism, and Westernism—should be introduced. Furthermore, the War of Independence should be examined as a process led by Mustafa Kemal to end the occupations and to establish a state based on national and popular sovereignty.
